Reality star Heidi Powell wants to drop cybersquatting case, but lawyer says ‘not so fast’
Weight loss reality star Heidi Powell filed hopeless lawsuit to get domain name from grandma that has the same name.
Weight loss reality star Heidi Powell filed a cybersquatting lawsuit in July to get the domain name HeidiPowell.com from a grandma with the same name. The grandma responded and filed counterclaims for reverse domain name hijacking, asking for $100,000+.
Now the reality star, who didn’t adopt the last name Powell until after the grandma registered the domain, is trying to extricate herself from the case. She told the court that the two parties have mutually agreed to a voluntary dismissal.
But Grandma Powell is saying ‘not so fast’ (pdf).
Her lawyers filed an objection to the dismissal, saying that they agree to a dismissal if it’s dismissed with prejudice (meaning it can’t be filed again) and asking the court to award the lawyers reasonable fees so far. (Wiley Rein LLP is representing Grandma Powell pro bono.)
She also plans to continue to pursue her counterclaims for reverse domain name hijacking.
